Philosophy of Discipline
The teachers of Saints Peter and Paul make use of St. John Bosco’s philosophy of education and his ‘preventive method’ of discipline using vigilance, patience, kindness, and positive encouragement. This method features a respectful, consistent presence of the staff, who model appropriate behavior as the children learn self-discipline and cooperation. Learning appropriate behavior is akin to learning in all other areas: it requires many trials before success can be expected.

In this method, children will begin to take responsibility for their behavior as they learn from consequences. This method will always maintain respect for the integrity of the children; they will be recognized for good behavior or will know that they are loved in spite of their unacceptable behavior. Consistency is vital, for children will become familiar with what is expected of them in regards to rules, schedules, etc.  In recognition of good behavior, students receive “Gotha” awards once a month at the school assembly. This assists in reinforcing respectful and virtuous behaviors among the student body.

Virtue Curriculum
The Virtue Curriculum is designed to assist families in learning and living the virtuous life. Grades Pre-K – 8thstudy the same virtue each month school-wide in order to place a special focus and emphasis on putting the virtue into practice.  Once a month a student from each grade is selected by their class for being a model of exemplifying that virtue throughout the month. These students are acknowledged at the School Assembly which assists in reinforcing and encouraging virtuous living as a whole school.

Positive Behavior Support (PBS)
Sts. Peter and Paul School implements Positive Behavior Support as our school-wide discipline program. We believe that introducing, modeling, and reinforcing positive social behavior is an important aspect of a student’s educational experience. Teaching behavioral expectations and rewarding students for following them is a much more positive approach than waiting for misbehavior to occur before responding. The purpose of school-wide PBS is to establish a climate in which appropriate behavior is the norm.

The Olweus Program
The Olweus Program (pronounced Ol-VAY-us) is a comprehensive approach that includes schoolwide, classroom, individual, and community components. The program is focused on long-term change that creates a safe and positive school climate. It is designed for use in elementary, middle schools. The program’s goals are to reduce and prevent bullying problems among schoolchildren, to improve peer relations at school, and improve the social climate of classrooms.
